Is there a best way to do keyword research for your blog? It’s difficult to say, but in this post I am going to show you my process of doing keyword research.

Ok, let me tell you this first. Right now everything about search engine optimization is changing, because search engines are now very intelligent and know exactly what the user is searching for.

Also, the quality of content is key. How do search engines know when a post isn’t good? I don’t know, but that is the reality.

Why is keyword research important?

Why am I telling you all of this? Because finding the right keyword for your post is important for two reasons:

  • To rank your content on the search engines
  • The quality of your content

I think this is the main reason why we all do keyword research for SEO and we want to find the best way to do keyword research. We want our content to rank in first place on the search engines.

What do I mean?

If your domain name is brand new you won’t have much authority, because the search engines are just getting to know your website or blog, and you also won’t have backlinks.

So, at this stage it will be difficult for your website or blog to rank high for competitive keywords.

What to do?

The quality of your content

A good keyword can make writing a post easy.

Let me explain. To rank a keyword on the search engines it has to be in the post multiple times.

In order to do that, the keyword has to look natural in the title, the subtitles and in the body of the text.

So when you are searching for a keyword for your post, you have to decide in advance whether that keyword would look good in the title that you have in mind, and if it would look good in the subtitles.

Keywords vs. Topics

Ok, some people say that keywords are no longer important for SEO and that the search engines are now so intelligent that the topic is what matters now.

Well, that idea has some truth in it. I have seen bloggers whose posts rank very well on Google without them worrying about keywords.

But, and here is the but. For example, let’s say that you’ve written a post about what you need to know when starting a blog, and it ranks on the first page of Google.

Now, how do people find your post?

With keywords.

People will write: how to start a blog? And they will find your post.

As you can see, keywords are still very important for SEO, because they are what people use to find information about a topic. But yes, you can still rank a post without worrying about keywords.

Elements of Keyword Research

There are three elements that you have to consider at the beginning of your keyword research:

  • Relevance
  • Authority
  • Volume

Your keyword has to be in a post that brings value to the audience. That is key, because, as I told you before, search engines are very intelligent now and they only show content that has value in it.

It’s not only your content; your whole blog or website has to be a good source of information and that is what search engines want.

Remember, search engines are businesses and they need good quality content to show to their users.

Authority

I want to say this about authority. The older your domain name is the more authority it will have.

Now if you share your post on social media and get clicks, likes and shares on it, that post will have authority in the eyes of the search engines.

For example, Reddit and Quora are sites with high authority in the eyes of the search engines.

If you answer a question on any of those sites and your answer has a link, and it is a good answer that goes viral, your post will rank high on the search engines.

Volume

Tools like Ubersuggest, SEMrush and Ahrefs measure the volume by MSV (monthly search volume), which means the number of times the keyword is searched per month across all audiences.

As I told you before, if your domain name is brand new you can’t rank yet for competitive keywords, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find keywords with a good volume of searches.

If your blog is brand new you can find keywords with 1300 visits per month to rank for.

The more posts you write and the more engagement your posts have on social media, the more authority you will have, and you will have more options of keywords to rank for.

What is Keyword Intent?

We do keyword research to find the right keywords to rank for. Beside that, we also need to take into consideration the intention of the user at the moment the user is making a query, this is very important in this post about the best way to do keyword research.

Keyword intent is the why? Why is the user making that query? In other words, why did the person make this search? Do they want to learn something? Are they looking to make a purchase? Or, are they looking for a particular website?

As you do your SEO keyword research, you want to consider the buyer’s intent behind particular phrases and whether your content matches it, trust me this is the the best way to do keyword research.

There are four primary types of search intent if we want to find the best way to do keyword research:

  • Informational (your prospects want to learn something)
  • Navigational (they are looking for a specific company or website)

So what keywords should I use?

Informational

Prospects looking for information will be asking questions like who, what, when, where, why, and how. Informational searches could include phrases such as “signs of lactose intolerance,” “best recipe for baked chicken legs,” or “history of Dayton, Ohio”.

Navigational searches often include the name of the business or request key details about them. For example, “Bank of America login” or “LA Fitness hours”.

Transactional

Transactional searches trigger words like “reviews,” “compare,” “best,” “vs.,” and “top 10”. These shoppers are close to buying and are examining their options to decide which product or service is their best fit.

Commercial

Commercial searches are used by prospects who are ready to buy. They include brand names, specific products (“Android phone,” “Ledger Nano key”), product categories (“floral dresses,” “cast iron pans”), and words such as:

  • Buy
  • Discount
  • Shipping
  • Coupon
  • Join
  • Subscribe

If you are selling a product, you’ll want to use transactional or commercial search trigger words. Include these keywords in the title, meta description, and on-page copy (like headings) of your webpage to help you rank for searches where people have more intent to buy.

At the beginning of your blogging journey you will be guessing how to write a new blog post.

But after you’ve written a few posts and understand the metrics of your blog, you will be writing better posts and be sure of what type of blog post to write.

What I am going to show you is my way of doing keyword research and I think is the best way to do keyword research. The tool I use is Ubersuggest, because it is good and also because I made a one-time payment for life and it was a great offer.

Step 1: Make a list of important, relevant topics based on what you want to write about.

For example, my blog is about social media marketing, digital marketing, SEO and blogging.

And one important thing: I know enough about those topics to create content regularly.

Step 2: Make a list of monthly content topics for your blog

The month has four weeks, which means you need to come up with four ideas to write about.

For example, based on my topics I can write for the next month:

  • SEO tactics

  • Tips for Instagram Reels
  • Does your business need to be on TikTok?

Those are my rough ideas, and those are the keywords, but I still don’t know if my blog can rank those keywords.

Step 3: Look for keywords to rank for

This is the step where I go directly to Ubersuggest and see what keywords I can rank for.

Let’s see:

As you can see, the keyword is difficult for my blog to rank on the search engines.

Now look at this.

As you can see, the keyword advanced seo tactics is green, which means that this keyword is easy for my blog to rank on the search engines.

For the title, I can play with the keyword:

  • 10 advanced SEO tactics for your blog
  • The advanced SEO tactics you need for your blog in 2022

Even though that keyword only has 20 searches per month, if your blog is new, you have to start somewhere.

That was easy, let’s look at another example so you can understand the best way to do keyword research.

I am going to try it with this keyword: the importance of Facebook for business.

As you can see, the keyword is there but it only has ten monthly searches, and it is difficult to rank for my blog.

I see other options, but there is nothing related to what I want to write about.

What to do if you are in the same situation?

You have to tweak your keyword a little. In this case I am going to use: Facebook for a small business.

This new keyword has the same idea of what I want to write about.

I found how to use Facebook marketing for a small business. It is easy to rank but only has ten monthly searches.

Also, it isn’t grammatically correct, so let’s make another tweak.

Finding keywords that are not grammatically correct is normal—don’t be mad about it.

Just play with your keyword until you find what you are looking for.

Step 4: Find Questions Your Customers Are Asking

Search engine optimization is changing fast, and now more than ever with the new Google algorithm called: “Helpful Content Update”.

Now, Google will prioritize original content that has value for people, and, most importantly, content written by humans for humans. Google does not want content made by artificial intelligence (AI) with the goal of ranking high.

It will be more important now to know what questions your customers are asking, because you need to bring value to them. That is what Google is looking for right now.

So, to create better content for your readers and reevaluate your content, Google advises the following questions:

  • Do you have an existing or intended audience for your business or site that would find the content useful if it came directly from you?
  • Does your content clearly demonstrate first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge (for example, expertise that comes from having actually used a product or service, or visiting a place)?
  • Does your site have a primary purpose or focus?
  • After reading your content, will someone leave feeling they’ve learned enough about a topic to help achieve their goal?
  • Will someone reading your content leave feeling like they’ve had a satisfying experience?
  • Are you keeping in mind our guidance for core updates and for product reviews?

As you can now see, it is more important than ever to answer the right questions for your target audience, because you have to create the right content for them.

For example, let’s say that you have a blog about BBQs, and you write a post about the best stores in which to buy BBQ meat. Your target audience will find your post and leave in two seconds, and that will not be OK in the “eyes” of Google so your content won’t rank.

Also, you have to prove that you have first-hand experience in the subject, and haven’t just copy-pasted content from other bloggers, or rewritten original content.

In this case, it is good to use a keyword such as “in my experience”, to make the point that you have first-hand knowledge on the topic.

Now, finding the questions that your customers are asking is also considered to be keyword research, and you have to do this to find the perfect keyword.

Where to find the questions your customers are asking?

That is a tricky question, but I will try to answer it.

By asking them

If you have a business and you are using social media, you can ask your target audience what questions they have about your business or your expertise.

In my experience, this is the best way to find the perfect keyword for your blog post. Your followers will always have questions, and you as an expert can answer those questions.

Or if your business is not on social media or does not have a large audience following it, you can do a physical survey. For example, if you have a coffee shop, you could ask your customers to fill out a small survey. Trust me, that data can be a gold mine for you.

Google can help you

Yes, Google can help you find the right questions from your customers. You need to remember that a question is also a keyword.

For that reason, follow this example.
