Is there a best way to do keyword research for your blog? It’s difficult to say, but in this post I am going to show you my process of doing keyword research.

Ok, let me tell you this first. Right now everything about search engine optimization is changing, because search engines are now very intelligent and know exactly what the user is searching for.

Also, the quality of content is key. How do search engines know when a post isn’t good? I don’t know, but that is the reality.

If your domain name is brand new you won’t have much authority, because the search engines are just getting to know your website or blog, and you also won’t have backlinks.

So, at this stage it will be difficult for your website or blog to rank high for competitive keywords.

A good keyword can make writing a post easy.

Let me explain. To rank a keyword on the search engines it has to be in the post multiple times.

In order to do that, the keyword has to look natural in the title, the subtitles and in the body of the text.

So when you are searching for a keyword for your post, you have to decide in advance whether that keyword would look good in the title that you have in mind, and if it would look good in the subtitles.

Commercial searches are used by prospects who are ready to buy. They include brand names, specific products (“Android phone,” “Ledger Nano key”), product categories (“floral dresses,” “cast iron pans”), and words such as:

  • Discount
  • Shipping
  • Coupon
  • Join
  • Subscribe

If you are selling a product, you’ll want to use transactional or commercial search trigger words. Include these keywords in the title, meta description, and on-page copy (like headings) of your webpage to help you rank for searches where people have more intent to buy.

Step 1: Make a list of important, relevant topics based on what you want to write about.

Step 2: Make a list of monthly content topics for your blog

The month has four weeks, which means you need to come up with four ideas to write about.

For example, based on my topics I can write for the next month:

  • Tips for Instagram Reels
  • Does your business need to be on TikTok?

Those are my rough ideas, and those are the keywords, but I still don’t know if my blog can rank those keywords.

Step 3: Look for keywords to rank for

This is the step where I go directly to Ubersuggest and see what keywords I can rank for.

As you can see, the keyword is difficult for my blog to rank on the search engines.

Now look at this.

For the title, I can play with the keyword:

  • 10 advanced SEO tactics for your blog

Even though that keyword only has 20 searches per month, if your blog is new, you have to start somewhere.

That was easy, let’s look at another example so you can understand the best way to do keyword research.

I am going to try it with this keyword: the importance of Facebook for business.

As you can see, the keyword is there but it only has ten monthly searches, and it is difficult to rank for my blog.

I see other options, but there is nothing related to what I want to write about.

What to do if you are in the same situation?

You have to tweak your keyword a little. In this case I am going to use: Facebook for a small business.

This new keyword has the same idea of what I want to write about.

I found how to use Facebook marketing for a small business. It is easy to rank but only has ten monthly searches.

Also, it isn’t grammatically correct, so let’s make another tweak.

Now the keyword is how to use Facebook for your small business. And it’s grammatically correct.

Finding keywords that are not grammatically correct is normal—don’t be mad about it.

Just play with your keyword until you find what you are looking for.

Remember: Humans are the ones who look for information in the search engines, not robots (for now), so you have to find keywords that are grammatically correct. This is important to find the best way to do keyword research.

How to master keyword research?

By doing it weekly, or daily, if possible.

This is because it all comes down to practice and more practice.

Good keyword research at an early stage of your website or blog can be a game changer in the future, because you need traffic.

Also, the more your site grows, the more keywords you can rank for.

Don’t be mad or sad if the keyword you want to rank for is difficult for you.

If you work hard on your site and get traffic, later you will rank for that keyword.
